Would you have any thoughts on the origins of 'Vermont charity'? I, a Brit always assumed the VT was a good liberal and thus generous state. As I noted, it didn't make DARE, which disappointed me, and it doesn't make an appearance on line as far as I could find. Or not in this definition.

The poorer, more rural, farming-or-fishing parts of New England (notably Maine & Vermont) had a long-time reputation (so far as I know largely maintained by holiday visitors; e.g. "New Yorker" writers) as tough, laconic, self-sufficient, xenophobic, & understandably stingy.
