Having just reread Aphra Behn's "Oroonoko".... Since dictionaries of criminal cant are not always written by criminals, & English chroniclers of other not-yet-civilized cultures will report expressions from barbarous tongues which are cited as information about the imperfectly-mothered (rather than forsaken mothering) land, I think it best to claim USA provenance (via Wodehouse) rather than UK.
